New IBAN for Brazil

Brazil's IBAN now has Pix inside it.

The Central Bank of Brazil has issued Resolução BCB No. 585/2026, adopting the IBAN standard (ISO 13616) to identify Brazilian bank accounts in international transfers.
From now on, any account held in Brazil can be represented as a single 29-character code, the same model already used across Europe and most of the world. That code carries the bank, the branch, the account, and a built-in check digit that validates the entire string using MOD 97 (ISO 7064).

Two points make this more than a formatting change.
1. Banks are now required to provide this code to clients whenever requested, and to accept inbound transfers sent in this format. Receiving funds from abroad becomes simpler and far less error-prone.
2. The resolution does not create a new registry. It reuses infrastructure Brazil already runs. The institution identifier embedded in the IBAN is the ISPB, the very same code that powers Pix, validated against the SPI participant list.
That second point is the part worth pausing on if you work in cross-border finance. Rather than building a parallel system, the regulator plugged an international standard into rails that are already live, already trusted, and already clearing enormous volumes every day. Interoperability through reuse, not reinvention.
The norm also retires Circular No. 3.625/2013, which had governed the Brazilian IBAN since 2013, and brings the rule into line with the current Pix and payments architecture.
For companies and professionals moving money in and out of Brazil, the takeaway is clean: one standardized, self-validating account identifier, accepted by every bank and understood everywhere.

Credit to Jean Cleiderman, whose post first brought this to my attention. Well worth a follow if you work in FX and international payments.
